More than 2,500 runners, walkers and supporters gathered in Point Loma Saturday for the first annual Philip Rivers 5K Walk & Fun Run.
“I’m truly gratified by the positive response our event has received,” said Rivers. “Tiffany and I are devoted to helping as many foster children as possible find loving, lasting adoptive families. This exciting event is a blessing and a heart-warming reminder that so many of us have so much to offer those who are less fortunate.”
The 5K run began at 8:15 am, with walkers following at 8:30 am. Almost 2,000 participated in the event. After the 5K run, an awards ceremony was held, along with family-themed music and entertainment. Events included live music, a Kids Fun Zone with 'bounce houses' by L.B. Jumpers Express, entertainer Dan McLellan's juggling Stilt-Man and a complimentary food court.
"This was our first Run Event. The participation was outstanding and the support for the foster children of San Diego county was overwhelming", said Rivers of Hope Foundation Executive Director, Mark Goodwin. "Over two thousand adults and children gathered together early on a holiday weekend morning to show support for Building Forever Families in San Diego County." After the run, information booths featured local adoption services, including San Diego County Adoptions, Angels-Foster Family Network, the adoption ministry of the Rock Church and Promises2Kids.
San Diego Chargers’ all-pro quarterback Philip Rivers and his wife Tiffany founded The Rivers of Hope Foundation in April with a mission to help children in need of a forever family find permanent loving homes and their own sense of self-worth by developing and coordinating resources and programs to create community awareness, recruit adoptive families, provide financial aid for adoption and assistance for foster children and orphans.
Proceeds from the Philip Rivers 5k Walk and Fun Run will benefit the Rivers of Hope Foundation. The Rivers of Hope Foundation provides financial aid for adoptive families as well as assistance for foster children. In addition, Rivers of Hope actively recruits adoptive families as part of its campaign to heighten awareness about the many adoption services programs that are available throughout San Diego
